چکیده

The TISDAG (Technical Infrastructure for Swedish Directory Access Gateway) project provided valuable insight into the current reality of deploying a wide-scale directory service. This document catalogues some of the experiences gained in developing the necessary infrastructure for a national (i.e., multi-organizational) directory service and pilot deployment of the service in an environment with off-the-shelf directory service products. A perspective on the project’s relationship to other directory deployment projects is provided, along with some proposals for future extensions of the work (larger scale deployment, other application areas). These are our own observations, based on work done and general project discussions. No doubt, other project participants have their own list of project experiences; we don’t claim this document is exhaustive! A Flexible Architecture for Wide-Area Service Discovery

Users of networked services traditionally have to know the network address of the desired service. As the network evolves from a simple infrastructure offering basic services (e.g. printers) into a sophisticated programmable infrastructure that supports a rich set of services such as virtual reality games, realtime video transcoding, and content providers, manual configuration of services becom...

Name space consistency in the Pangaea wide - area file system HPL

Pangaea is a wide-area file system that enables ad-hoc collaboration in multi-national corporations or in distributed groups of users. This paper describes Pangaea’s approach for keeping the file-system’s name space consistent and proves its correctness. Maintaining the name space is a simple matter in traditional file systems that store the entire volume in a single node. It is not so in Panga...

Naming, Migration, and Replication for NFSv4

In this paper, we discuss a global name space for NFSv4 and mechanisms for transparent migration and replication. By convention, any file or directory name beginning with /nfs on an NFS client is part of this shared global name space. Our system supports file system migration and replication through DNS resolution, provides directory migration and replication using builtin NFSv4 mechanisms, and...

Query Routing in the TerraDir Distributed Directory

We present the design and evaluation of the query-routing protocol of the TerraDir distributed directory. TerraDir is a wide-area distributed directory designed for hierarchical namespaces, and provides a lookup service for mapping keys to objects. We introduce distributed lookup and caching algorithms that leverage the underlying data hierarchy. Our algorithms provide efficient lookups while a...

Middleware Support for Locality-aware Wide area Replication

Coherent wide-area data caching can improve the scalability and responsiveness of distributed services such as wide-area le access, database and directory services, and content distribution. However, distributed services differ widely in the frequency of read/write sharing, the amount of contention between clients for the same data, and their ability to make tradeoffs between consistency and av...
